Lairenmayum Sheibyashachi (LMS) Law College was founded on 7th August, 1958, initially named as the Manipur Law College. The then Home Minister Lal Bahadur Sastri, who later became the Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation stone of the LMS law College. The founder principal of the college Lairenmayum Ibungohal Singh, in the name of his father Lairenmayum Sheibyashachi, donated a substantial sum of money for the development of building, infrastructure, library for the institution.
The college was granted affiliation by the Bar Council of India since 1969 and also recognized by the University Grants Commission. The institution was converted into a full- fledged Government Law College in 1981.
The founding fathers of the Law College, developed an emblem as the replica and legacy for the Sabyasachians for years to come. It was the picture of a growing gigantic banyan tree, a spreading mat under it on which a treatise lies wide open, a lit up lamp on the left and an incense stick stand on the right with an inscription written at the foot “Vidya Ratanam Mahadhanam” meaning – “Knowledge is the supreme wealth”, depicting an atmosphere of a divine serenity for the teacher and taught.
Since 2018, L.M.S Law College has become one of the constituent colleges of Dhanamanjuri University,Manipur(DMU) under the Danamanjuri University Act,2017 which came into force on 6th April,2018. The other constituent colleges are D.M.College of Science ,D.M. College of Arts, D.M. College of Commerce, and G.P. Women College.
To meet the emerging needs of the students in their pursuit to higher legal studies in Manipur, LL.M classes have accordingly been opened in the College under the Department of Law, Manipur University in the year 1996, now still continuing under the Dhanamanjuri University, Manipur. The college is situated at Dewlahland, Chingmeirong, Imphal by the eastern side of National Highway No.2(New)/39(old). The College has picturesque surrounding, serene atmosphere and a congenial environment for study. It is about 2km away from Kangla, the heart of the Imphal City. The college also offers Ph.D programme since 2008 till date.
COURSE, TIMING AND MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION:
Course offered in the College is three years LL.B. which shall extend over a period of 3 academic years. Classes starts from 9.00 a.m. English is the medium of instruction.
ELIGIBILITY FOR LLB ADMISSION
For three year LL.B Course, the candidate must be a regular graduate from a university recognised by Central or State laws or Deemed university or a foreign university recognised as being at par with an Indian University by law.
The applicants should have obtained a minimum percentage of marks not below 45% of the total marks in case of General category and 40% of the total marks in case of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe and 42% in case of Other Backward Classes.
ELIGIBILITY FOR LL.M ADMISSION:
For two year LL.M course, the candidates must be a law graduate from a university recognized by central or state law or deemed university or a foreign university recognized as being at par with an Indian University by law.
The applicants should have obtained a minimum percentage of marks not below 50% of the total marks in case of General category and 45% of the total marks in case of reserved categories.
